THE SANCTUARY OF HERCULES WINNER

shadow The Sanctuary of Hercules Winner

The Sanctuary of Hercules Winner is one of the largest sacred complexes of Roman architecture in the Republican era. Located in Tivoli, it was built during the 2nd century BC. Svetonio says that here Augustus administered justice on numerous occasions, under the shrine sanctuaries.

It was an impressive size structure, which had long been deteriorated and whose restoration work was only completed in June 2011. It was on a stretch of ancient Tiburtina street and important portions of the complex were included in the former Tivoli paper mill (below the medieval quarter).

The sanctuary, with a rectangular plan (188 x 140 m), originally measured 3000 m2 and consists of three main parts: the theater, which exploits the natural digression of the land, a large square with porches and a true temple.

A series of terraces, porches and colonnades created a grand setting around the place of worship, according to the tastes of the 2nd and 1st century BC. The sanctuary was located out of the city walls along the road that used to link Sannio to the Roman plain and was a crucial economic hub for all the people of central and southern Italy.
