BOTANICAL GARDEN OF ROME VILLA CORSINI

Today, the botanical garden of Rome is located at the foot of the Gianicolo, in the old park of villa Corsini, once residence of Cristina of Sweden.

The gardens of Palazzo Corsini occupied a large area of the Gianicolo in the eighteenth century, where in 1833 the Botanical Garden of Rome was transferred, an area where today many trees and botanical rarities live. The structure depends today on the Department of Environmental Biology at the University of Rome "La Sapienza".

The presence of water, woods and green areas allowed the Emperor Septimus Severo to build the Horti Getae and the Spas, and for centuries the Roman nobility erected villas surrounded by vineyards and groves.

In the seventeenth century Cristina of Sweden chose the Riario's villa as his residence and gathered a crowd of literati and artists from which Arcadia originated.
Acquired by Corsini in 1736, the palace and the gardens were restored by Ferdinando Fuga, who created scenographic fountains and staircases, preserving the forested woods, a precious testimony to the original Gianicolo vegetation.
In the 12 hectares, now run by the Department of Environmental Biology at the "La Sapienza" University, there are many ancient and endangered plant specimens.
