CONVENT OF S. PIETRO IN MONTORIO:

CONVENT OF S. PIETRO IN MONTORIO

shadow convent of S. Pietro in Montorio

In 1876 the Italian State granted to Spain a seat within the convent of S. Pietro in Montorio al Gianicolo.

The 15th century building, built according to the tradition where St. Peter was martyred, was wanted by Amedeo da Silva and financed by the real Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile.

In 1500 Nicolò Circignani realized the Franciscan cycle in the cloister, but it was the Bramante to magnify the site with the construction of the Tempietto: an unsurpassed synthesis of classical architecture and Renaissance culture erected on the groove of the cross of Peter; inaccessible crypt we will have the exclusive privilege to visit.

With the establishment of the Academy in the nineteenth century, the building was renewed by Alejandro del Herrero y Herreros, undergoing other modifications until 1942.
Over the years the constant work of study and research carried out by the Academy, together with the interesting collection of art collections, has consolidated its role as a cultural plaza between Italy and Spain.
